Because of the progressive annual investment by the government, the 110,000 tobacco growers in Chongqing are expected to benefit greatly from leaf tobacco and burley production in 2005.
In 2004, Chongqing City extended 120 million yuan (14.45 million U.S. dollars) in investment to support the production of the 584,000 mu (38,933 hectares) of leaf tobacco and the 50,000 mu (3,333 hectares) of burley in the city.
According to the sources, the city's unit investment in leaf tobacco and burley production will reach 220 yuan per mu (26.5 U.S. dollars per 0.067 hectare) in 2005, as compared with 146 yuan per mu (17.6 U.S. dollars per 0.067 hectare) in 2002 and 185 yuan per mu (22.3 U.S. dollars per 0.067 hectare) in 2004.
