Tobacco Farmers Payout

Tobacco farmers across the state might receive some extra holiday spending money. A Tarheel business judge heard arguements yesterday as to whether or not tobacco companies are obligated to make a "Phase Two" payment this month to the farmers. The money compensates over the losses growers suffered in result of higher cigarette prices following a 19-98 settlement. Since congress approved a tobacco buyout this fall, the tobacco companies feel they don't have to make a payment. The judge expects to rule Wednesday or Thursday. Enditem
