Possible Grants to Tobacco Growers for Switching Crops

Tobacco growers trying to move into growing alternative crops can learn about applying for a grant with the Rural Advancement Foundation International-USA, otherwise known as RAFI, according to Carl Cantaluppi, horticulture agent for the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service in Granville and Person Counties. The Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Fund will make grants to farmers in Granville County in 2005 for demonstration of new alternatives to replace lost income. The Granville County Extension Office will host a meeting of interested growers for RAFI Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. All growers are welcome. High priority will be given to innovative projects that show farmers a new direction or opportunity, with particular interest in projects that make new or additional uses of tabacco facilities or equipment and those that demonstrate value-added marketing.
