AZERBAIJAN: Leaf Growing Area Expanded 21 per Cent

Azerbaijan's ministry of agriculture posted a 21 per cent expansion of the tobacco growing area compared to the previous year. The government's efforts to revive the leaf growing sector which used to produce over 50 million kilos annually in the 1980s included supplies of elite seeds of Virginia and Burley tobacco to farmers, as well as raising purchasing prices for raw leaf by 20 per cent, reports Rustabak.ru. New leaf varieties have been tested in trial fields and proved to retain their taste, aroma and other qualities when grown locally, the ministry of agriculture says. Enditem
