State Tobacco Production Was Higher in 2003 Source from: Wisconsin Ag Connection 05/20/2004 Wisconsin farmers harvested an estimated 1,820 acres of tobacco in 2003, an increase of 370 acres compared the year before. The state's agriculture department announced that overall production increased to 4.26 million pounds despite the average yield being down 294 pounds per acre to 2,338.
The average price per pound received by farmers for all tobacco produced in 2003 was $1.75, no change from the previous year. Value of production for the 2003 crop totaled $7.43 million. The value of production increased $751,000 compared to the prior year.
In 2003, Southern tobacco (Type 54) farmers harvested an estimated 1,400 acres with an overall yield of 2,480 pounds per acre. That equates to a production of 3.47 million pounds, which is valued at $6.08 million. Northern tobacco (Type 55) yielded 1,865 pounds per acre on an estimated 420 acres harvested during 2003.
