Key Tobacco-Producing Region Aims to Double Output Value

Qujing City in southwest China's Yunnan Province – renowned as the largest flue-cured tobacco producing base in Asia – aims to more than double the 2002 output value of its tobacco industry in six years. In 2003, Qujing City produced 2.9 million dan (140,000 tons) of flue-cured tobacco with an output value of 1.41 billion yuan (169.8 million U.S. dollars), accounting for 10 percent of the total flue-cured tobacco output value generated by the whole tobacco industry of China in the year. According to Mayor Mi Dongsheng of Qujing City, Qujing City is planning to build itself into a large high-quality leaf tobacco production base in China. In 2002, the tobacco processing and support sectors of the tobacco industry of Qujing City generated over 9 billion yuan (over 1.08 billion U.S. dollars) in output value.
