Malawi: Sale of Flu-cured Tobacco Suspended

Lilongwe Auction Floors has suspended the sale of Flue-cured tobacco due to disagreements on the price between buyers and sellers of the leaf.Auction Holdings Limited (AHL) Corporate Manager, Mark Ndipita said Thursday that the sales will resume after the price issue has been resolved.

"Farmers are complaining of lower prices offered by the buyers at the market compared to other markets in Limbe-Blantyre and Mzuzu where the same grade of tobacco is offered better prices" he said.

He added that farmers also complained of high rejection rate on the product hence the suspension of the sales.

Meanwhile officials from the government, AHL and the buyers are discussing the issue and the market will open shortly.
