Malawi Tobacco Sales Rake in US$31m in Three Weeks

Tobacco earnings have reached over US$31million from 21.7 million kilogrammes in three weeks of sale at the country's tobacco auction market.Tobacco Control Commission chief executive Bruce Munthali said Monday that this year's earnings appeared a bit better compared to what the country realized last year.

"The market is peaking up and the prices offered to the leaf are based on quality. We are optimistic that this year's earnings will be higher than last year," he said.

He said this year the country produced quality leaf despite facing some challenges of dry spells and in some areas heavy rains, which has caused the reduction of volumes by 10 million kilogrammes from 190 million to 180 million kg.

Tobacco is the country's major exchange earner.
