Malawi President to Open Tobacco Auction Market

Malawi President Peter Mutharika will on Wednesday officially open the 2015 Tobacco Auction Market to kick-start tobacco leaf sales to be held at Kanengo Auction Floors, in the capital Lilongwe.According to Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) Chief Executive Officer Bruce Munthali, following the opening of the Kanengo Market, other markets like Limbe Auction Floors in Blantyre, Chinkhoma Market in Kasungu district and Mzuzu Auction Floors in the north will be opened later in the month.

"There are a lot of buyers this year such that farmers should expect good prices because there will be a lot of competition amongst them," he said.

He bemoaned the drop in the product;s output of about 10 million kilograms to 181million compared to last year's 191million kg mainly due to floods which washed away the crop.

Tobacco is the major foreign exchange earner and contributes to about 60 percent to the country's economy. Enditem
