Namibia: Kamwi Against Zambezi Tobacco Plantation Source from: namibian.com 03/11/2015 ![]() THE minister of health, Richard Kamwi says his ministry does not support the idea of leasing 10 000 hectares to a Chinese company to grow tobacco in Liselo, in the Zambezi Region. Kamwi made these remarks during the inauguration of the new Onamutayi clinic yesterday. "I am not happy with the tobacco plantation the government intends setting up. Tobacco is not in the best interest of Namibians. It is a deadly thing among the communities. Tobacco is not in the best interest of the health ministry," said Kamwi. He added that the health ministry recently tabled a new tobacco bill that prohibits smoking in public places and people should make sure that no smoking at public places is tolerated. The dilapidated old Onamutayi clinic was built in 1950 and it serves more than 700 people with an attendance of 80 patients per day. The new Onamutayi clinic was built at a cost of N$5,1 million, however additional funds are needed to renovate the old clinic into staff accommodation, he said. Kamwi also stressed that Angolans should receive free medical treatment at all hospitals in Namibia. "The Namibian and the Angolan governments are currently holding talks regarding free health services being offered to Angolans in our country," he said, advising nurses at Onamutayi clinic to render service to the patients with respect, confidentiality and impartiality at all times. Kamwi told staff members to give their full support to the incoming health minister, adding that during his tenure, the ministry has progressed well. Oshana governor Clemance Kashuupulwa commended the health ministry during Kamwi's tenure saying the recent upgrade and building of new hospitals and clinics in the region had reduced congestion at the few facilities. He said that more than 10 clinics were constructed and more than four were upgraded in the region. Enditem |
