China: Qujing City Invests Heavily in Building Irrigation Systems for Tobacco Production Source from: Qujing Daily 01/07/2015 ![]() Qujing City in southwest China's Yunnan Province -- a key national-level tobacco-producing area -- has kept increasing investment in the construction of irrigation systems for tobacco production in the city over recent years, particularly since a severe drought visited Qujing City in 2009. In 2010, Qujing City took the lead in executing projects of building irrigation systems for tobacco production. So far, Qujing City has completed the construction of the Canal of Happiness linking the Dumu Reservoir, which is in normal operation now. The construction of the Water Diversion Jirong irrigation project in Xuanwei is near completion. Construction of the Yiqi Reservoir in Fuyuan and the Xintianhe Reservoir in Zhanyi is busy underway. The plans for building the Chaoyang Reservoir in Huize and Xiaotiansheng Dam Reservoir in Malong have been approved by the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, and preparation for their construction is underway. Initial statistics show that from 2010 to 2013, Qujing City invested a total of 786 million yuan (128 million U.S. dollars) in the construction of irrigation systems for tobacco production in the city, and applied to the tobacco industry for supplying 519 million yuan (85 million U.S. dollars) in aid in the construction of irrigation systems for tobacco production there. So far, 485 million yuan (79 million U.S. dollars) of the investment has been delivered. Enditem |
