Malawi Tobacco Earns Higher Than Previous Year

The sale of Malawi tobacco has earned about US$357 million higher than what was realized last year and the market has since been closed.

Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) Chief Executive Officer Bruce Munthali said that about 188 million kilograms have been sold compared to last year's 168 million kilograms with US$355 million earnings.

There is only a little difference of US$2 million higher than last year.

"We have finished all the tobacco brought to the market by growers and we have since closed the market," he said.

Although Muthali said farmers brought good quality tobacco, buyers offered low prices compared to last year where the leaf's quality was low.

However, he said the low prices have not affected only Malawi but even neighbouring countries were also offered low prices by the international buyers. Enditem
