<strong>China: Hunan Provincial Administration Attaches Great Importance to Prevention, Control of Tobacco Aphids</strong>

Hunan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration in south central China's Hunan Province has attached great importance to prevention and control of tobacco aphids with aphidius gifuensis ashmead in leaf tobacco production across the province so far this year, achieving fine results.

The provincial tobacco monopoly administration has organized scientific and technological research taskforces to conduct research on localization of the technology for preventing and controlling tobacco aphids with aphidius gifuensis ashmead in leaf tobacco production. So far, it has trained technicians to the tune of 420 persons-times, contributed nearly 5.7 million yuan (904,000 U.S. dollars) for research, development and application of the technology.

As a result, the technology for preventing and controlling tobacco aphids with aphidius gifuensis ashmead in leaf tobacco production has been applied on more than 70,000 mu (4,666.7 hectares) of tobacco-growing farmland across the province.

On June 18-20, Department of Science and Technology of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration organized experts in the relevant fields to form a delegation to inspect the generalization of application of the technology for preventing and controlling tobacco aphids with aphidius gifuensis ashmead in leaf tobacco production in Hunan.

It was reported that the delegation earnestly heard reports on generalization of the technology for preventing and controlling tobacco aphids with aphidius gifuensis ashmead in leaf tobacco production given by the Division of Science and Technology of Hunan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration (Tobacco Company) and major tobacco-growing zones in Hunan including Yongzhou, Xiangxi and Chenzhou; conducted in-depth exchange of views with researchers and technicians in charge of specifically fulfilling the project of generalization of application of the technology for preventing and controlling tobacco aphids with aphidius gifuensis ashmead in leaf tobacco production; and offered their valuable opinions on ways of breeding aphidius gifuensis ashmead, the timing of releasing aphidius gifuensis ashmead, evaluation of effects of prevention and control, adoption of measures for protecting varieties of aphidius gifuensis ashmead, and research on localization of the technology for preventing and controlling tobacco aphids with aphidius gifuensis ashmead in leaf tobacco production.

Besides, the delegation also conducted on-site inspection of the greenhouses for breeding aphidius gifuensis ashmead in Changsha and Yongzhou Cities, conducted on-site verification of effects of releasing aphidius gifuensis ashmead in fields, and specifically asked local tobacco growers about their acceptance of this technology.
