Tobacco Producers to Sue Bulgaria over Co-financing Allocation

Bulgarian tobacco producers will sue the state over "unfair allocation of the national co-financing in the sector".

Ivan Sabahlakov, a producer from the town of Goste Delchev, announced the information for Radio FOCUS – Pirin.

Mr Sabahlakov explained that the trial was already initiated and is being heard by the Administrative Court in the capital city Sofia.

"The trial is initiated on behalf of all 1,800 tobacco producers in the country, who feel harmed. They received BGN 1 less after this year's allocation of the national subsidies, which set different prices for the Basmi variety, which is most widely grown in Gotse Delcgev and Kardzhali regions.

Tobacco producers with reference amounts of up to 2 tons received BGN 3 per kilo, while the rest of the reference amounts of more than 2 tons – BGN 2.40 per kilo.

The money was already paid to the producers."

Sabahlakov commented that such division in terms of "working" and "less working" was a precedent. He determined the measure political. He added that the producers would win the trial, otherwise they would refer the case to Strasbourg. Enditem
