<strong>China: STMA Organizes Appraisal of Faint Scent Tobacco Development Project</strong>

The State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA) held in Wuyishan City of southeast China's Fujian Province on May 29 an on-the-spot meeting to evaluate and appraise the project of Wuyi brand faint scent high-quality leaf tobacco jointly executed by Nanping City Subsidiary of Fujian Provincial Tobacco Company and Qingzhou Tobacco Research Institute of China National Tobacco Corporation.

During the meeting, a panel of nine experts and honorary judges from Yunnan Academy of Tobacco Agricultural Sciences, China Leaf Tobacco Company, China Tobacco Zhejiang Industrial Co., Ltd., Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute, etc observed the growth of Wuyi brand faint scent high-quality tobacco in the field, heard reports on execution of the project, technological reports, efficiency analysis reports, reports on scientific and technological surveys, etc given by the taskforce designated to execute the project. They also consulted relevant data and raised questions about relevant issues.

The experts and honorary judges fully affirmed the execution of the project, and issued a set of opinions on it, which included the following points:

The demonstration area of the project is of a favorable ecological environment. The tobacco crops are developing well in the field, with all crops showing neatness and uniformity, balanced nutrition, good layering and yellowing, and obvious characteristics of maturity.

The experts and honorary judges fully affirmed the features of Wuyi brand faint scent high-quality tobacco mainly characterized with "Wuyi ecology, high content of potassium and faint scent", and believed that the project is of a complete range of materials and detailed data, is innovative in terms of definition of the quality styles, ecological characteristics development, distribution of the characteristic variety of Wuyi brand faint scent high-quality tobacco, and research and integration of the system of crucial technologies for its production, and has generally reached the leading level of similar research in China.

Meanwhile, the experts and honorary judges required the taskforce designated to execute the project to make continued efforts to tap the connotation of the characteristics of Wuyi brand faint scent high-quality tobacco, and further strengthen efforts for generalization and application of its achievements in scientific and technological research.
