China: City Vice-mayor Inspects Tobacco Production in Malong County

Vice-Mayor Zhu Xingyou of Qujing City in southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province inspected the work of tobacco production in Malong County of Qujing on April 16, specifically asking about the various measures, arrangements and plans for leaf tobacco production in Malong County in 2014.

During the inspection, Zhu Xingyou conducted on-site verification and heard reports on leaf tobacco production in the county. The vice-mayor praised Malong County for maintaining a generally very favorable situation of leaf tobacco production, recalling that the transplantation of tobacco seedlings onto fields in the county in 2013 was seasonally started on March 15. In 2014, the transplantation was seasonally started on March 28, and formal transplantation was realized on April 5. It means that Malong County has accurately fulfilled the transplantation during the best period of the season, and that the postponement of transplantation this year was correct, according to Zhu Xingyou.

On the basis of the fine work already done, Malong County must attach importance to racing against time in striving to complete the transplantation seasonally, exert all efforts to organize local tobacco growers to fulfill the transplantation for the current year in a concentrated way, and accelerate the process of transplantation, in order that the entire work of transplantation for 2014 will be completed by the end of April, the vice-mayor urged.

Meanwhile, in light of the current lingering drought with high temperatures, efforts must be made to strengthen field management of the tobacco seedlings already transplanted, and adopt powerful diversified measures to do a good job of technical guidance to prevent fading of seedlings and to guarantee a high rate of survival of seedlings, according to Zhu Xingyou.
