Morogoro Honours Tobacco Firm for Community Support

TANZANIA Leaf Tobacco Company (TLTC) was on Sunday named the overall winner of Uluguru Awards for the year 2014, having donated more than 200m/- in support of various development initiatives in Morogoro Region.

Speaking in a colourful awards gala night dinner organized by Morogoro based NGO, Morogoro Cultural Development Centre (MCDC), Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Dr Joel Bendera, said TLTC deserved the overall victory.

"The company has won through a transparent and competitive selection process which showed that the company is touching many lives with their support," he said.

Dr Bendera said the company's presence in Morogoro had contributed significantly in boosting the economy of the region through various social and economic needs in the region including health, education and water.

He said Morogoro was greatly privileged to host the company that deals in tobacco trade in the country with its presence in nine regions.

He said the firm employs thousands of Morogoro residents at its head offices as well as in the sister company Tanzania Tobacco Processing Limited (TTPL) has 2500 employees.

"TLTC deserves this trophy as the best company in Morogoro.

It has employed a great number of our brothers and sisters and we all have witnessed various donations to Morogoro communities including the recent Ultra sound machine to our referral hospital worth 65m/-," he said while handling the trophy.

The TLTC Group Legal and Corporate Affairs Director, Mr Richard Sinamtwa, said the company's donations within Morogoro region was the region of 200m/- for the year 2013/2014.

Mr Sinamtwa noted that the amount was donated to various economic and social needs in line with the firm's policy which covers health, education and water.

"You are witnessing the Tanzanian leaf, as sourced by TLTC and processed in Morogoro by TTPL feeding into Universal leaf to meet our global customer demands and as such we are always committed to be part of the Morogoro communities in alleviating societal challenges so out of the 200m/-, 130m/- has already been disbursed and the remaining amount will be handed out in kind soon," he said.
