Bulgartabac to Supply China with Oriental Tobacco

Representatives of Bulgartabac and China Tobacco will meet to discuss the opportunity of Bulgarian oriental tobacco exports to the Asian company, Agriculture Minister Prof. Dimitar Grekov stated at the meeting of the agricultural committee in the Parliament.

Oriental tobacco is a major raw material used in quality cigarettes and demand is twice greater than the supply, deputies informed. According to them, the demand for the oriental tobacco, which only grows in four countries in the world, including Bulgaria, will increase in the future. Accordingly, Bulgaria could take advantage of that.

As such, it would be important to provide additional subsidies to farmers who grow tobacco, which may be through the means of the agri-environmental measures of EU programs, Desislava Taneva from GERB suggested.

The Minister of Agriculture promised that the ministry will work to ensure EU funds for the sector. State aid for tobacco should be also increased: in 2014, they will receive BGN 100 million from the national budget. Enditem
