<strong>China: Joint Lab for Raw Materials Supply Guarantee Established in Yunnan</strong>

A joint laboratory for guaranteeing the supply of leaf tobacco raw materials has recently been established in Wenshan Prefecture of southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province, in efforts to strengthen planning for scientific-technological research of leaf tobacco supply and training of human resources for leaf tobacco production and supply.

The laboratory has been jointly established by Shanghai Tobacco Group, Wenshan Prefecture Tobacco Company and the tobacco research institute of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

On August 29, a ceremony was held in Wenshan to unveil the nameplate of the joint laboratory, with the participation of Deputy General Manager Gao Qiang of Shanghai Tobacco Group, Deputy Director Wang Shusheng of the tobacco research institute of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Deputy Governor Hu Rong of Wenshan Prefecture, who doubles as a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Wenshan Prefecture Committee.

Addressing the ceremony, Gao Qiang proposed that efforts be made to do a good job of medium- and long-term planning for guaranteeing the supply of leaf tobacco by means of the joint laboratory, with science and technology as an important support, with development of the Chunghwa brand family as a target, and with further improvement of the quality of leaf tobacco of Wenshan as a pursuit, and to launch research of technologies of tobacco varieties, growing and curing, in order to fully tap the advantages of leaf tobacco of Wenzhan, enable it to fully embody its styles and characteristics, and jointly promote cooperation therein to a higher level.

Also addressing the ceremony, Wang Shusheng said that by jointly establishing the laboratory, Shanghai Tobacco Group, Wenshan Prefecture Tobacco Company and the tobacco research institute of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences should stand at a new start point, make a full use of the platform of the joint laboratory, do a good job of planning for scientific-technological research for guaranteeing the supply of leaf tobacco, launch pertinent research of the whole process of leaf tobacco production, and sponsor training and education of tobacco growers and workers with the tobacco industry in the new tobacco-growing areas in Wenshan.
