<strong>China: Alliance One International Delegation Investigates New Tobacco Varieties in Yunnan</strong>

A seven-member delegation from Alliance One International – a leading independent leaf tobacco merchant serving cigarette manufacturers – was in Cangling Township in Chuxiong City, Zhaowei Village in Yuxi City and Qiubei County in Wenshan Prefecture in southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province on August 19-23 to check the performances of four new tobacco varieties of Alliance One International in the three different areas.

The delegation included breeding expert Li Yongping with Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Agriculture Sciences Institute, Alliance One International South America chief agronomist Imo. L. Mallmann and China agronomist development manager, departmental chief Feng Jiming of China Tobacco Yunnan Import and Export Co., Ltd., and Alliance One International Yunnan area manager Zhao Guangjie.

Everywhere they went, the delegation members would go deep into the fields to check the performances of new tobacco varieties including agronomic traits, trend of appearance of growth, resistance to plant diseases and exterior quality of leaf tobacco cured, would hear reports on progress in mid-term growth, and would exchange opinions with local leaders in charge of trial growing of the new tobacco varieties on the performances of the new tobacco varieties in local growing and the their performances in growing in other countries including Brazil.

On August 23, Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Agriculture Sciences Institute, China Tobacco Yunnan Import and Export Co., Ltd., and Alliance One International held a tripartite symposium in Yunnan's capital city of Kunming to define the varieties and quantities for trial growing in 2014, and to exchange opinions and viewpoints on deepening cooperation in research, current hotspot issues in the field of tobacco research, realities of leaf tobacco production, etc.

Besides, the delegation also visited the World Tobacco Varieties Park in Yuxi City, and fully affirmed the great significance of the work of establishing the park. Enditem
