<strong>China: Tobacco Pests Control Technology Development Project Passes Appraisal</strong>

The project of Qujing City Tobacco Pests Comprehensive Prevention and Control Technology Systems Research, Development and Application sponsored by Yunnan Provincial Company of China National Tobacco Corporation has recently passed a field appraisal in Qujing City of southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province.

The project has been jointly fulfilled by Qujing City Tobacco Company, Yunnan University and South China Agricultural University.

On August 3, a panel of seven experts from Yunnan Agricultural University, Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Yunnan Provincial Plant Protection and Inspection Station, Yunnan Provincial Soil and Fertilizer Work Station, Yunnan Tobacco Agriculture Sciences Research Institute, Yuxi City Branch of Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Company and other institutions conducted the field appraisal of the project of Qujing City Tobacco Pests Comprehensive Prevention and Control Technology Systems Research, Development and Application, under the auspices of the Division of Science and Technology of Yunnan Provincial Company of China National Tobacco Corporation.

In conducting the field appraisal, the panel of experts successively went to the tobacco pests comprehensive prevention and control demonstration area at Yile Village under Red Soil Villagers Committee in Caiyun Township, and Caiyun Township tobacco diseases and pests monitoring point, aphidius gifuensis breeding farm and tobacco pests comprehensive prevention and control commanding center, to hear WPF reports on the project given by the taskforce designated to execute the project , watch on-site demonstration by the tobacco pests comprehensive prevention and control commanding center, and hear relevant work reports and technological reports on the project.

Afterwards, the panel of experts unanimously agreed that the fulfillment of the project has led to the establishment of a tobacco pests comprehensive prevention and control system "with informatization as a platform, with joint action by multiple sides as the basis, with agricultural prevention and control as the foundation, with biological prevention and control as a priority, with physical prevention and control as an auxiliary means, and with chemical prevention and control in supplementation"; that the field management of Yunyan 105 as the leading variety in the demonstration area is well regulated, with the tobacco crops there growing well; that with new technologies of induced resistance prevention and control as the basis, the project has led to the research and development of exclusive organic inducers for plant diseases resistance with the function of strengthening tobacco seedlings during the seedling stage; that with green and blue streptomyces and trichoderma strains as carriers, the project has led to explorations for combined application of organic inducers for plant diseases resistance and bio-control bacteria, with the result indicating that comprehensive application hereof will not only induce tobacco into developing systemic resistance to diseases and make tobacco more resistant to various diseases, but will also check and antagonize reproduction and expansion of pathogenic bacteria; that the project has led to the research and exploration of technologies for the use of secondary plant metabolites for prevention and control of tobacco aphids, and technologies for the use of cahtheconidea furcellata for prevention and control of prodenia litura, with the achievement of initial successes; and that in light of the realities of leaf tobacco production in Qujing City, the project has led to the formulation of Qujing City Tobacco Pests Monitoring Early Warning Technology Rules, Qujing City Tobacco Diseases and Pests Online Diagnosis Technology Rules, the Rules of Qujing City Tobacco for Technologies for Agricultural Prevention and Control of Tobacco Pests and Qujing City Tobacco Pesticides Use Technology Rules, which were proven to have generated favorable results in practical application in 2012 and 2013.

The panel of experts pointed out that the project is of definite research targets, scientific and rational technological lines, smooth progression in research, and remarkable effects in tobacco pests prevention and control.

The panel of experts, meanwhile, proposed that efforts be made to strengthen in-depth research of single-project technologies for tobacco pests prevention and control, and conduct scientific and rational integration and application hereof.

On the basis of the aforesaid findings, the panel of experts agreed to have the project of Qujing City Tobacco Pests Comprehensive Prevention and Control Technology Systems Research, Development and Application pass the field appraisal. Enditem
