China: New Tobacco, Burley Varieties Pass National-level Agricultural Appraisal

Two new tobacco and burley varieties – the PVH2254 newly introduced by three institutions and the 0B122 jointly developed by two institutions based in southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province both passed stringent national-level agricultural appraisal on July 24.

As a new tobacco variety, the PVH2254 was newly introduced into China from Brazil by Yunnan Academy of Tobacco Agricultural Sciences, China Tobacco Breeding Research (South) Center and China Tobacco Yuxi Seeds Co., Ltd. while the 0B122, as a new burley variety, was jointly developed by Yunnan Academy of Tobacco Agricultural Sciences and Binchuan Burley Co., Ltd.

It was reported that the PVH2254 is a hybrid with male sterility introduced into China from Brazil in 2009. This tobacco variety has a relatively wide adaptability and shows favorable performance in growing in tobacco growing zones in both north and south China that is superior to counterparts. With a moderate period of growth of about 120 days, the PVH2254 is highly resistant to the TMV, and is moderately resistant to black shank and the red spot disease. It is therefore of a favorable economic character. The PVH2254 is on a par with the K326 and the NC89 as counterparts in control in terms of appearance quality. The inherent chemical ingredients of the leaf of the PVH2254 are relatively coordinative. Therefore, the PVH2254 is a fine new tobacco variety resistant to plant diseases and with a high quality that generates fine economic returns in terms of both quality and quantity.

It was also reported that the 0B122 is a new burley variety of a relatively fine quality with the Ky14 as its female parent and with the relatively highly resistant Ky8959 as its male parent developed on the basis of hybrid and selection.

The period of field growth of the 0B122 is about 96 days. The number of leaves on each of the 0B122 is larger than that of Eryan No. 1 as a counterpart in control by two leaves. The crops of the 0B122 grow in a robust way and become mature in a relatively concentrated way. It is moderately resistant to bacterial wilt and black shank, and is moderately susceptible to south root knot nematode. The original leaves of the 0B122 show a relatively favorable maturity, with coordinative inherent chemical ingredients. The 0B122 is on a par with counterparts in control in terms of the appearance quality and the sensory quality. Enditem
