China: Research Institute Delegation Visits Tobacco-growing Zone Source from: Qujing Tobacco Monopoly Administration 07/04/2013 ![]() A four-member delegation from Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Science Research Institute, led by Vice-President Jin Yan, visited a tobacco-growing zone in Shizong County of Qujing City on May 21-22, conducting investigation of leaf tobacco production and offering guidance to the county over its work of establishing a model leaf tobacco production science and technology project in 2013. Accompanying the delegation on the visit was Xie Yan, director of the technology center of Qujing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration, which doubles as Qujing City Tobacco Company. During the visit, Jin Yan first of all heard introductions given by Shizong County Tobacco Subcompany Manager Wu Jian and tobacco production technicians on the work of tobacco seedlings transplantation under mulching film, the establishment of biological prevention and control systems, development of soil microorganisms, development of mild aromatic high-quality leaf tobacco products, the execution of relevant projects hereof, etc. The delegation went deep into tobacco fields in Long Street Village and Red Soil Village in Caiyun Township of Shizong County to conduct on-site investigation of the trend of growth of tobacco seedlings transplanted under mulching film, the establishment of biological prevention and control systems and the execution of other projects concerned, and held talks with local tobacco production technicians and tobacco growers, to elaborately learn about the existence of problems in the application of the technology of transplantation of tobacco seedlings under mulching film in terms of the choice of floating pans, determination of the best age of seedlings, determination of the best season for transplantation, adoption of methods of fertilizer application, determination of the quantity of fertilizer applicable, adoption of the technology of transplantation, prevention and control of plant diseases and pests, etc. During the visit, Jin Yan fully affirmed the work of Shizong County in promoting both experiment and demonstration of science and technology for leaf tobacco production in the county, and extended her support to Shizong County for its clean production idea of recycling used mulching film, retrieval of tobacco stems for conversion into organic carbon products, etc. Jin Yan pointed out that projects of development of science and technology for leaf tobacco production are mainly intended to solve practical problems existing in the process of leaf tobacco production. Therefore, she said that for execution of the project of developing technology for tobacco seedlings transplantation under mulching film, systematic research needs to be launched in accordance with all the crucial technical processes of tobacco seedlings transplantation, in order to form a package of well-developed technical support measures. For the establishment of biological prevention and control systems, efforts need to be made to innovate ideas closely in accordance with the realities of leaf tobacco production, adhere to the policy of integrating "green" production science and technology in accordance with the targets of "greenness, ecology, characteristics, safety and high quality", keep exploring new paths for developing "green", ecological, safe and high-quality leaf tobacco products, and develop new methods for "green" production, clean production and standard production of leaf tobacco, she said. And for execution of other model projects of development of science and technology hereof, in-depth observation records need to be made in accordance with the aspects of tobacco varieties, pesticide residuals, soil microorganisms, etc, and full play should be given to the advantaged roles of science and technology in enlarging and strengthening the tobacco industry, in order to well provide service for the development of a modern tobacco agriculture in Shizong County, according to Jin Yan.
