<strong>China: STMA Holds Meeting on Mild Aromatic Tobacco Development</strong>

The State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA) – the regulator of China's tobacco industry – held in Jianyang City of southeast China's Fujian Province on June 9 a meeting on mid-term evaluation of the project of developing high-quality characteristic mild aromatic leaf tobacco products.

The meeting made examination and evaluation of the execution of the project of developing high-quality characteristic mild aromatic leaf tobacco products in the first half of 2013, and urged efforts to further promote effective implementation of the various work of the project.

Before the panel of experts designated to evaluate the project went to Yongding, Ninghua and Jianyang Cities to conduct on-site verification of fulfillment of research subjects under the project so far in 2013, and to separately hear reports given by various experimental units on the execution of the project.

At the meeting, Li Wenqing, a leader from Fujian Provincial Tobacco Science Research Institute in charge of execution of the project, reported to the panel of experts the general situation of fulfillment of research subjects under the project in Fujian Province so far in 2013, introduced results of support experiments conducted by Fujian Provincial Tobacco Corporation in execution of the project, and, at the same time, put forward suggestions for solving some problems discovered in the process of execution of the project so far in 2013.

It was reported that the project of developing high-quality characteristic mild aromatic leaf tobacco products is a major part of the major exclusive project of developing characteristic high-quality leaf tobacco products. The core target of the project is to specifically define the stylistic characteristics and quality of mild aromatic leaf tobacco products, unveil the theoretical basis formed by the quality and stylistic characteristics of mild aromatic leaf tobacco products, develop technologies for embodying regional quality characteristics of mild aromatic leaf tobacco products and realize large-scale development of mild aromatic leaf tobacco products, in order to realize a great leap forward in the development of leading technologies hereof.

The project includes a package of 10 research subjects under it, such as the research of definition of the quality styles of high-quality characteristic mild aromatic leaf tobacco products, the research of the ecological basis formed by the quality styles of high-quality characteristic mild aromatic leaf tobacco products, and the research of the metabolic and molecular basis formed by high-quality characteristic mild aromatic leaf tobacco products.
