China: County Holds Meeting on Tobacco Production, Construction of Cisterns

Fuyuan County in Qujing City of southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province held on May 30 a meeting on lifting mulching film, raising ditches and earthing up in tobacco fields and on the construction of a series of cisterns for tobacco production in the local region, known as "Rainbow Cisterns", with Deputy County Chief Dai Taoling delivering an important speech.

In the speech, Dai Taoling emphasized that lifting mulching film, raising ditches and earthing up is a mature technique for tobacco production, and that application of this technique in suitable regions will contribute to improving the quality of leaf tobacco. Therefore, it is an effective approach for increasing the income of tobacco growers and raising the economic efficiency of the local region.

Dai Taoling also emphasized that the construction of "Rainbow Cisterns" is a project benefiting the local population, which will contribute to improving the conditions of infrastructure facilities for irrigation for farmlands in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, enhancing the comprehensive leaf tobacco production capacity, and laying a solid foundation for leaf tobacco production in the local region.

In efforts to fight a lingering drought hitting southwest China over the past four consecutive years and solve the problem of water shortage in tobacco-growing areas in the city, Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration has designated Qujing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration to oversee the construction of 20,000 "Rainbow Cisterns" for tobacco production in the city.

On the work over a next period of time, Dai Taoling said that efforts shall be made to well manage the work of generalizing the technique of lifting mulching film, raising ditches and earthing up, and well make arrangements for establishing the 14,300 mu (953 hectares) of model tobacco fields, in order to start the process of lifting mulching film and earthing up in a timely manner.

The deputy county chief also said that efforts shall be made to do a good job of construction of "Rainbow Cisterns", to choose suitable sites for construction in accordance with the local conditions, and establish rational models for construction, in order that a total of 1,030 "Rainbow Cisterns" already built can be put into operation by the end of July.

Finally, Dai Taoling urged the local authorities to earnestly do a good job of submitting plans for the construction of infrastructure facilities in the local region in 2014, practically strengthen the construction of infrastructure facilities for tobacco production, and manage to ensure that all production tasks for 2014 will be well accomplished as scheduled.Enditem
