<strong>China: City Government Holds Meeting on Tobacco Production, Cistern Construction</strong>

The municipal government of Qujing City in southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province held on May 26 an on-the-spot meeting to mark the process of lifting mulching film and ridging in leaf tobacco production for the current year, and to make additional arrangements for the execution of an irrigation project launched by Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration, known as Project Rainbow Cisterns.

In efforts to fight a lingering drought hitting southwest China over the past four consecutive years and solve the problem of water shortage in tobacco-growing areas in the city, Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration has designated Qujing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration to oversee the execution of Project Rainbow Cistern, which provides for the construction of 20,000 "Rainbow Cisterns" for tobacco production in Qujing.

The meeting urged efforts to mobilize all departments concerned at all levels to jointly launch a major campaign of intertillage management in leaf tobacco production in Qujing, with the energy focused on lifting mulching film, ridging and earth up, and practically promote the construction of "Rainbow Cisterns", in order to lay a solid foundation for well fulfilling the targets and tasks for leaf tobacco production for the current year, and take new steps in promoting the development of a modern tobacco industry in Qujing City.

The dignitaries attending the meeting included leaders in charge of tobacco production with the municipal government, chief leaders and leading officials in charge of leaf tobacco production with Qujing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration and leaders of Qujing City Water Affairs Bureau.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the participants visited and site of lifting mulching film, ridging and earth up at the Western Village in Banqiao Township of Xuanwei City and the site of construction of "Rainbow Cisterns" Yaoshang Village of Reshui Township. Enditem
