Malawi Tobacco Market Opens March 11

This year's tobacco selling market season is expected open on March 11, 2013, the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) has said.

The selling season will start in Lilongwe on March 11, followed by Mzuzu in northern Malawi on March 13. While the Limbe auction floors will open on March 18 with Chikhoma in Kasungu opening on April 8.

However TCC spokesperson Juliana Chidumu could not say anything in terms of the prices, but hoped that this year's prices will be competitive.

"All is set for the season and we are expecting a god selling season as you are aware that this time around tobacco will be sold through contract following the adoption of IPS project," said Chidumu.

She also said TCC, which has embarked on a scale impounding exercise, is working tirelessly to curb illegal export of tobacco to neighboring countries and intermediate trade. Enditem
