Tanzania: Tobacco Firm Supports Morogoro Schools

SCHOOL committees in the country have been urged to utilize responsibly donations extended to the education centres by various stakeholders.

The call was made here on Thursday by the Deputy Mayor of Morogoro, Ms Lydia Mbiaji, when receiving two classrooms worth 25m/- donated by Tanzania Leaf Tobacco Company Limited (TLTCL) to Misufini B. Primary School and Uwanja wa Taifa Secondary School.

"If these corporates realise that you use their monies properly today, if you go back to them tomorrow for more assistance, they will not hesitate to double that amount," noted the outspoken deputy mayor, warning that swindlers were enemies of the people

She thanked the Morogoro based tobacco firm for coming to the students' rescue, hence greatly alleviating the common experience of sitting on the floor. She said that it was equally important for individuals including parents and teachers to join hands with institutions like TLTC, district councils to support the education sector under the public private partnership.

"We need to borrow a leaf from TLTC , every time we knock their doors, they have not hesitated to extend their help to us, we should also develop a habit of topping up with few contributions from our salaries and earnings," she said.

She congratulated parents of Misufini B Primary School for showing the way by contributing 1,650,000/- towards the construction of the classroom, with TLTC donating 10m/-.

Handing over the classrooms on behalf of his company, the TLTC's Director of Treasury and Administration, Sylvester Kapungu said the donation was in-line with the company's policy on community development, with the focus on three areas namely health, education and water, within tobacco growing areas.

"We did not hesitate to build these two classes upon receiving requests and due process was followed, because they are both based in Morogoro, where our head office is also based even though our operations are in tobacco growing regions," he elaborated. Enditem
