China: Local Government Holds Meeting on Tobacco Work

The People’ Government of Qujing City in southwest China’s tobacco-producing Yunnan Province held a meeting on tobacco work on December 20, to earnestly implement the spirit of recent national and provincial leaf tobacco work conferences, and to define “acceleration of a shift of the mode of leaf tobacco production and endeavor to develop outstanding tobacco-producing zones” as central tasks of the tobacco work of Qujing City for the present time and over a future period of time.

Fan Huaping, deputy secretary of the Communist Party Committee of Qujing City and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party Committee of Qujing City, and Wu Lizhu, director of Qujing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration and secretary of the Communist Party Committee at Qujing City Tobacco Monopoly Administration, attended the meeting and delivered speeches.

Also attending the meeting was Zhu Xingyou, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party Committee of Qujing City and director of United Front Work Department of Qujing City.

The meeting was presided over by Li Jianjun, secretary general of the People’s Government of Qujing City.

In his speech, Fan Huaping emphasized that leaf tobacco production is a major earner of both income for local tobacco growers and financial revenue for Qujing City, and that in 2013, leaf tobacco production in Qujing City shall follow the requirement of “stability, controllability, quality and competence.

Therefore, steps will be taken to practically do a good job of stabilizing the scope of leaf tobacco production in preventing serious fluctuations in leaf tobacco production, and to stick to the principle of growing tobacco by contracts, in strictly controlling blind development and strengthening the foundation for guaranteeing the production and supply of high-quality leaf tobacco as raw materials for cigarette production, Fan said.

Meanwhile, Wu Lizhu stressed that at the present and over a future period of time, the central tasks of leaf tobacco work inQujing City are “acceleration of a shift of the mode of leaf tobacco production and endeavor to develop outstanding tobacco-producing zones”.

Through acceleration of a shift of the mode of leaf tobacco production, the tobacco industry of Qujing City will be able to embark upon the path of “ecology, safety, high quality and characterization” in leaf tobacco production development, to realize a shift onto the pattern of intensity, quality, efficiency and ecology in leaf tobacco production, to develop leaf tobacco brands of Qujing City with unique ecological advantages, with the high quality of leaf tobacco, with unique styles and characteristics, advanced technology and management, and with a harmonious environment of the tobacco-producing zone, and to strengthen the capacity of Qujing City to supply high-quality raw materials of leaf tobacco with local characteristics.
