China: STMA Issues Planning for Building Water Source Projects by Tobacco Industry

The State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA) – the regulator of China’s tobacco industry – issued on December 13 the Planning for the Construction of Water Source Projects by the Tobacco Industry (2013-2015), in efforts to vigorously strengthen the construction of water source projects by the tobacco industry, and further establish a fine image of the tobacco industry as a responsible industry.

The planning provides that from 2013 to 2015, the tobacco industry of China will carry out the construction of water source projects in key tobacco-growing regions nationwide, with investment expected to reach 15 billion yuan (2.39 billion U.S. dollars) by 2015. The projects to be built will mainly be in the forms of small-sized reservoirs and irrigation projects, which will gradually form systems of comprehensive support water source projects.
The construction of water source projects by the tobacco industry will contribute to greatly promoting the water source regulation and irrigation guarantee capacity of the tobacco-growing regions concerned, practically increasing the income of local tobacco growers, improving conditions for agricultural production and enhancing the capacity of the local regions to resist natural disasters.
