India: HI Tobacco Exports up 26%; May Exceed Record $924-m

Virginia tobacco exports surged in the first half of the current fiscal registering a 26 per cent growth, according to Tobacco Board Chairman G. Kamala Vardhana Rao.

He said here on Friday that there was 30 per cent growth during the period (April-Sept) in tobacco leaf exports and 10 per cent in export of tobacco products in rupee terms.

During the period, 1,12,472 tonnes of leaf tobacco was exported and 15,582 tonnes of tobacco products against 95,685 tonnes and 17,941 tonnes respectively during the previous year (2011-12).
The leaf tobacco fetched Rs 1,800 crore and tobacco products Rs 496 crore during the current financial year against Rs 1,380.46 crore and Rs 449.69 crore respectively during 2011-12.
bright outlook
The Chairman said the outlook was pretty rosy and the exports may touch, or even exceed, the record figure of $924 million by the end of the financial year.
During the first half of the year, Belgium topped the list of importers with 16,955 tonnes followed by Indonesia with 8,742 tonnes, the US with 7,960 tonnes, Russia with 6,694 tonnes, Egypt 6,348 tonnes, the UAE 5,345 tonnes and several others. Enditem
