Chinese County Invests Heavily in Building Infrastructure for Tobacco Production Source from: TobaccoChina Online 11/21/2012 ![]() Qianxi County in southwest China’s Guizhou Province – the second largest tobacco-producing region in China – has recently invested a huge sum of 190 million yuan (about 30 million U.S. dollars) in exclusive funding for the construction of infrastructure facilities for leaf tobacco production in the county. Over recent years, Qianxi County has taken the development of a modern tobacco agriculture as a priority and breakthrough point in reform of both agriculture and the structure of the agricultural sector in the county, and has thus actively strengthened funding support to local tobacco growers. The investment made this time will be used for building infrastructure facilities for tobacco production in the fields of transportation, farm machinery, land, electric power supply, water conservancy, the construction of new rural areas, etc. Specifically, 15.77 million yuan (2.5 million U.S. dollars) will be used for building 42 tractor paths in tobacco fields measuring 83 kilometers; 1.378 million yuan (218,730 U.S. dollars) will be used for improving infrastructure facilities for leaf tobacco curing by building 20 intensive curing barns, installing four sets of standby power supply equipment and repairing 67 sets of heating equipment; 10.41 million yuan (1.65 million U.S. dollars) will be used for providing subsidies for purchasing 1,192 sets of farm machinery for leaf tobacco production; 24.5 million yuan (3.89 million U.S. dollars) will be used for comprehensive treatment of land to the tune of 7,000 mu (467 hectares); 39.26 million yuan (6.23 million U.S. dollars) will be used for building the Fairy Cave Reservoir as a water source project with a total storage capacity of 1.08 million cubic meters; and 16 million yuan (2.54 million U.S. dollars) will be used for the construction of new rural areas in eight tobacco-growing villages in the county.
