Zimbabwe: Tobacco Farmers Honoured

The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) says the production of tobacco in the country can reach up to 300 million kilogrammes in the next few years if the industry maintains the momentum that it has.

Speaking at a prize giving ceremony to honour the top tobacco grower of the year, TIMB Board Chairperson, Monica Chinamasa, applauded local farmers for increasing tobacco production.

Tobacco production has been on the rebound in the last 3 years reaching 145 million kilogrammes this year up from 45 million kilogrammes in 2008.

Mr Olisse Essen scooped the tobacco grower of the year in the commercial growers category and walked away with a tractor.

Mr Nehemiah Nyamurwa from Mashonaland East and Emmanuel Gwaze from Mashonaland Central were also first in the medium and small-scale growers category respectively.

Zimpapers Chief Executive Officer Justin Mutasa scooped the second place in the medium scale growers category.  Enditem
