China: Provincial Government Holds Meeting on High-quality Leaf Tobacco Development

The government of east China’s Anhui Province held a joint meeting in the provincial capital city of Hefei recently on the development of high-quality leaf tobacco with local characteristics in the southern part of the province, hearing reports by Anhui Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration on high-quality leaf tobacco production in south Anhui, analyzing the situation faced in the production of high-quality leaf tobacco in south Anhui, and conducting research of key issues hereof.

The meeting pointed out that over recent years, the quality of leaf tobacco produced in Anhui has obviously improved. In particular, sweet aromatic leaf tobacco produced in south Anhui with local characteristics has entered the main formula of Mount Huangshan (Heavenly Capital) brand cigarettes of China Tobacco Anhui Industrial Co., Ltd. and the formula of Chunghwa (Soft) brand cigarettes of Shanghai Tobacco Group, showing a favorable trend of development.

In light of the existence of problems faced in the development and production of high-quality leaf tobacco in south Anhui with local characteristics, including problems on the part of the organizational and leadership mechanisms, basic tobacco farmland construction, land trading, use of land for building facilities for tobacco production, use of electricity by facilities for tobacco production, construction of infrastructure facilities, etc, the meeting conducted in-depth research and analysis, and required all local regions and all departments to practically strengthen guidance over the development and production of high-quality leaf tobacco in south Anhui in accordance with the requirement of both the Communist Party Anhui Provincial Committee and Anhui Provincial Government, keep strengthening efforts for support, further enhance the awareness about the provision of service for leaf tobacco production, promote service provision to higher levels, jointly make efforts to promote a shift from traditional agricultural production onto production of a modern tobacco agriculture, and strive to promote healthy development of high-quality leaf tobacco in south Anhui with local characteristics.
