Tanzania: Katavi Farmers Earn Over 12 Bn  in Sales

TOBACCO farmers in Katavi region have earned over 12bn/- after selling their commodity to Primary Cooperative Societies during this purchasing season.
 
However, the earning has plummeted drastically to 12bn/- from the last season in which farmers in the region earned over 15.9bn-.Katavi Region Tobacco Board Senior Official, Mr. Yusuph Mahundi told reporters that this purchasing season shows that the production has dropped down to 8,782,467,00 kilos which is worth over 10.6bn/-.
 
He further said that the purchasing season which started on May 15 was officially closed on September 08, in which 6,812,025,000 kilos worth 12,398,013,000- were purchased from the farmers at the cost of 1.82 US dollars per kilo.
 
According to him, the last purchasing season farmers earned over 23bn/- after selling 15,595,493,000 kilos of which a kilo sold at 1.48 US Dollars.However, he said that farmers sold their tobacco to Primary Cooperative Societies including Ilende, Ukonongo, Nsimbo, Katumba, Mpandakati, Mishamo Tamcos, Mishamo Farmers Association.
