China: Crop Protection Expert Guides Work of Disaster Relief in Xuanwei County Source from: TobaccoChina Online 09/14/2012 ![]() Associate Research Fellow and crop protection expert Hu Jian with Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Agriculture Institute in southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province traveled to Xinle Village in Tangtang Township of Xuanwei County of Qujing City in Yunnan that had been hit hard by a recent extraordinarily serious disaster of torrential rainfall, to guide the work of disaster relief there.
On August 27, Xinle Village was visited by an extraordinarily serious disaster of torrential rainfall, with a precipitation of 169.6mm. The torrential rainfall resulted in the submergence of around 1,000 mu (66.7 hectares) of tobacco crops in Xinle Village, and destruction of walls around the tobacco fields, with floods in tobacco fields measuring around 1 meter in depth. Besides, leaf tobacco storages in the village were also flooded. The serious natural disaster has caused severe damage to leaf tobacco production and purchase in the local region during the current leaf tobacco harvest and curing season.
Accompanied by leaders of Xuanwei County Tobacco Subcompany, Hu Jian went deep into tobacco fields in Xinle Village to check the situation of damage from the disaster and guide the work of disaster relief and restoration of production.
At the tobacco fields, Hu elaborately asked about the aftermath of the disaster and efforts for emergency repair. He offered on-site guidance over sterilization, leaf tobacco storage maintenance, treatment of leaf tobacco damaged, etc, and required staff members of the local leaf tobacco station to do a good job in the following three respects:
Firstly, the leaf tobacco station shall increase its awareness about disaster prevention and control, actively communicate with the local meteorological authorities and do a good job of disaster emergency preparedness.
Secondly, the leaf tobacco station shall actively do a good job of sterilization of the environment of tobacco fields, to guarantee the physical health of its staff members and tobacco growers.
And thirdly, the leaf tobacco station shall organize human resources to conduct all-round inspection of houses, electric power facilities, telecommunication equipment after the disaster, and go all out to check against damage from the disaster. Efforts shall be made to temporarily increase the height of the walls damaged in the disaster, to prevent resurgence of flood water into tobacco fields.
Presently, both the work of disaster relief and restoration of tobacco production in the village are busy underway in an orderly manner. Enditem
