Malaysia: 830 Tobacco Farmers Get Flood Relief

More than 830 tobacco growers in Kelantan who lost their crops in floods early this year, will receive financial aid totalling RM167,400 (S$67,000) from the Federal Government. The assistance was handed over by Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house organised by the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board.

It was part of the RM1.4 million allocated by the Federal Government for Kelantan tobacco growers who had been affected by floods since 2003. One of the recipients, Roslina Omar, 41, said she was happy with the money as it would help her cover the cost of replanting her crop. The mother of three of Kampung Tok Dasat said she and her husband, Mohd Nordin Mohd Rowi, 43, had suffered losses of about RM20,000 after floods in March. "We could not raise money to buy saplings for replanting. We had to borrow from friends." Enditem
