Japan: JT Radioactive Testing Shows Leaf Tobacco is Safe Source from: The Asahi Shimbun 08/15/2012 Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) announced on Aug. 14 the result of pre-purchase testing of this year’s flue-cured Virginia tobacco grown in Japan for radioactive materials, which has shown that none of the leaf tobacco tested exceeded the JT's standard value.
JT has been conducting a number of tests at each stage of its production process for radioactive materials in Japanese domestic leaf tobacco to allay consumer concerns since the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
Prior to this year’s Japanese domestic leaf tobacco harvest, since the middle of July, JT has again been conducting radioactive cesium testing on leaf tobacco before purchase, with the support of tobacco growers. The testing was done in Ibaraki, Tochigi and Chiba prefectures and included 68 samples from muncipalities in the areas. Enditem
