Zimbabwe Wrapping up a Good Season Source from: Tobacco Reporter 08/03/2012 When scheduled flue-cured auction sales came to an end on Friday, Zimbabwean growers had sold about 140 million kg for US$514.3 million, according to a story in the Zimbabwe Herald.
The volume and value of sales were both up on those of last year, though, so far, the volume has fallen short of the 150 million kg target.
However, contract sales are still in progress and at least one mop-up auction sale is due to take place on August 22.
Of the 140 million kg sold this season, 88 million kg was sold under contracts while 52 million kg was auctioned.
This year's average price of US$3.67 per kg was 33 per cent higher than last year's US$2.75 per kg.
The proportion of rejected tobacco, at 5.56 per cent, was down from last year's 6.95, a drop that was attributed to farmers gaining experience in packaging their crop. Enditem
