India's Growers to Be Compensated for Cyclone Damage

India's union government has sanctioned the payment of Rs25 million as compensation for tobacco growers whose crops were destroyed by cyclone Thane in December, according to story in the Hindu relayed by the TMA and quoting the chairman of the Tobacco Board of India, G. Kamalavardhan Rao. The board said yesterday that growers farming in the Nellore and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh would be compensated in the amount of Rs6,000 per ha of destroyed crop. The board fixed the compensation for partially damaged crops at Rs4,000 per ha; and it set the compensation for destroyed and damaged barns at Rs3,500 per barn and Rs2,500 per barn respectively.
