China: Hunan Xiangxi Guhe Builds Water Sources for Reservoir Irrigating Tobacco Fields

The tobacco industry of China is taking steps to build key water sources for the Guyanghe Reservoir that irrigates large areas of tobacco fields in Guzhang County of Xiangxi Prefecture in south China’s Hunan Province. On June 26, a ceremony was held to mark the construction of the reservoir. The ceremony was attended by officials from Xiangxi government, Water Resources Department, provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration, construction companies and supervision units. It is estimated that the project requires a total investment of 207 million yuan,including 152 million yuan raised by State Tobacco Monopoly Administration. The project will last 24 months. When the construction of the project is completed, the Reservoir will be capable of supplying water for 28,300 mu (1886.66 hectares) farmland, including 19000 mu (1266.66 hectares) can plant tobacco.
