China: County Completes Project of Soil Preparation for Tobacco Production

Xuanwei County in Qujing City of southwest China's tobacco-producing Yunnan Province has successfully completed a large project of soil preparation for tobacco production covering 13,290 mu (886 hectares) of farmland in Haide and Yaoshang Villages in Reshui Township of the County. The project of soil preparation was started on March 25, 2012, and was completed on April 14. Xuanwei County Tobacco Monopoly Administration, which doubles as Xuanwei County Tobacco Subcompany, attaches great importance to the project of soil preparation by strengthening management and improving measures to promote and guarantee timely completion of the project. In the execution of the project of soil preparation, the county has also completed the construction of 53 paths for mechanized farming measuring 41.07 kilometers, and 23 irrigation channels measuring 12.62 kilometers. The completion of the project of soil preparation has contributed to effectively promoting rational use of farmland in the local region. Upon completion of the project of soil preparation, the farmland was redistributed to local tobacco growers for tobacco production in 2012, in accordance with the sizes of plots determined before the execution of the project.
