China: Research Institute Organizes Fulfillment of Major Research Projects

Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Agriculture Science Research Institute in southwest China’s tobacco-producing Yunnan Province held an on-site meeting on May 11 on the organization of experts to fulfill major exclusive research projects, including the project of tobacco genome research, making specific arrangement for fulfillment of the relevant research work.
Attending the on-site meeting were President Gu Huaguo, Vice-President Li Yongping and Deputy Inspector Yi Mian of Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Agriculture Science Research Institute, as well as relevant experts with the Tobacco Seedlings Development and Biotechnology Research Center, the Technology Integration and Promotion Center and the Tobacco Agricultural Technology Research Center of the research institute.

During the meeting, Gu Huaguo and his entourage personally went to the Isolation and Quarantine Negative Pressure Greenhouse of the research institute to study the growth and experiments of new tobacco varieties introduced, and particularly went to the experimental base of the research institute to check the growth of wild tobacco, transplantation of field experimental materials, the operation of greenhouse experiments, and the construction of the laboratory for experiments in resistance to plant diseases.
Speaking on the occasion, Gu Huahuo said that so far, biotechnology and life science have become major driving forces for the revolution of new science and technology, and that in-depth promotion of fulfillment of the project of tobacco genome research will lead to the obtainment of a quantity of important functional genes of tobacco properties with independent intellectual property rights, full-scale revelation of the genetic background of the relevant germplasm resources, and establishment of the core advantageous status of Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Agriculture Science Research Institute in the research of tobacco genome, which will in turn be of great significance to promoting the whole work of tobacco seedlings development to higher levels, realizing a fundamental breakthrough in the development of tobacco varieties, developing emerging sectors of the tobacco industry, and better maintaining the advantageous and leading status of Yunnan Provincial Tobacco Agriculture Science Research Institute in the development of tobacco seedlings.
Gu Huaguo emphasized that all efforts should be made to promote fulfillment of the project of tobacco genome research, accelerate establishment of the system of tobacco molecular breeding technologies, and selectively develop high-quality, characteristic, multi-resistance, high-yield and high-efficiency green new tobacco varieties with a lower content of harmful substances.
Firstly, the role of the Isolation and Quarantine Negative Pressure Greenhouse in the introduction of new tobacco varieties should be brought into full play. In this respect, efforts should be made to promote in an all-round way isolation, separation and quarantine in the introduction of tobacco varieties, pollens and other materials from abroad, to prevent any entry of tobacco downy mildew, tobacco ringspotvirus, etc, and to provide guarantee for the safety and high quality of varieties in the fulfillment of the project of tobacco genome research.
Secondly, efforts should be made to promote the work of tobacco field experiments. In particular, efforts should be well made for transplantation and field management of wild tobacco, and for further strengthening the follow-up of field experiments and growth of wild tobacco, to practically give play to the contribution of wild tobacco to the fulfillment of the project of tobacco genome research.
Thirdly, efforts should be made to strengthen management over greenhouses, with priority given to doing a good job of experiments in greenhouse comparison, analysis of growth of tobacco crops and experiments in the application of chemical fertilizers.
And fourthly, efforts should be made to accelerate construction of the laboratory for experiments in resistance to plant diseases. In particular, efforts should be made to promote basic transformation of the laboratory and improve its facilities, in order to promote to higher levels the capacity of laboratory development in the fulfillment of the project of tobacco genome research.
