Pakistan Growers Threaten Minimum-Price Protest

Tobacco growers in Pakistan are unhappy with the minimum indicative price that has been set and are threatening to launch a country-wide protest, according to a story the Dawn newspaper. In the past, minimum tobacco prices were fixed and notified by the federal government, but this is no longer done. So, in the meantime, the Pakistan Tobacco Board has been fixing the minimum indicative price, and, this year, it has set it at Rs117 a kg. Growers are unhappy about this price and about the timing of the announcement of the minimum price, which can be critical. They want tobacco prices to be fixed and announced before sowing takes place; so that they can decide whether to grow tobacco or other crops. Enditem
