Board Reduces Karnataka's Authorized Crop Source from: Tobacco Reporter 04/25/2012 Tobacco growers from Karnataka's Mysore and Hassan districts are opposing the Tobacco Board of India's decision to cut the 2012-13 authorized crop volume to below that of the previous season, according to a story in the latest issue of the BBM Bommidala Group newsletter.
They believe that the leaf cultivated in the Mysore-Hassan region is of high quality and in good demand on international markets.
The growers have called the decision to cut the state's authorized crop from last season's 101.6 million kg to 97.5 million kg unreasonable and illogical.
More than 57,000 growers will be affected by the decrease in the authorized crop size.
It was not clear whether this cut was made simply to reflect the realities of the market or whether it was the start of India's oft-talked-about tobacco production decrease under its obligations to the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Enditem
