Tobacco Prices Causing Concern in India Source from: Tobacco Reporter 03/30/2012 Some tobacco growers in Andhra Pradesh, India, are unhappy at the level of unsold leaf that has built up because of what they see as the low prices offered by traders, according to a Business Standard story relayed by the TMA.
By March 23, only 4.12 million kg of leaf had been sold in the state, 3.62 million kg of which had been produced in the southern light soil (SLS) region of Prakasam District.
While farmers in the northern black soil region of East Godavari and parts of Khammam, the central black soil area of Krishna District and Guntur District, and the northern light soil region of West Godavari were said to be getting good prices for their crop, growers in the Prakasam District were being quoted Rs98-100 per kg, well under the Rs130 per kg price offered last year.
Tobacco Board chairman, G. Kamalavardhana Rao, said the board would decide on the issue once it had received from traders details about the available stock. Enditem
