Burley Import Restrictions Proposed in Zimbabwe Source from: Tobacco Reporter 01/18/2012 The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) has proposed that Burley should not be imported into Zimbabwe before the local crop has been sold, according to a story in The Standard relayed by Tobacco China Online.
The proposal comes ahead of the opening of the selling season next month, which, as usual, will be hugely dominated by flue-cured but which will include a small amount of Burley.
The TIMB chairperson, Monica Chinamasa, reportedly said that the move was aimed at helping to keep Burley growers on the land.
Burley tobacco has always been the poor relative of flue-cured and growers have struggled particularly hard since the closure of Burley Marketing Zimbabwe (BMZ), an auction floor that was dedicated to Burley. Enditem
