Malawi Reflects on Season of Depressed Prices

With tobacco sales almost at an end in Malawi, the country's growers have sold about 223 million kg for an average price of US$1.24 per kg, according to a story in the Nyasa times quoting the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) chief executive, Dr. Bruce Munthali. Earlier this year, the agriculture ministry estimated that growers spend up to US$1.00 to produce one kg of tobacco. Munthali was quoted as saying that the TCC was considering introducing a quota system to regulate tobacco production and address the quality issues that had depressed prices and increased rejection rates this season.
