Malawi Reflects on Season of Depressed Prices Source from: Tobacco Reporter 12/01/2011 With tobacco sales almost at an end in Malawi, the country's growers have sold about 223 million kg for an average price of US$1.24 per kg, according to a story in the Nyasa times quoting the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) chief executive, Dr. Bruce Munthali.
Earlier this year, the agriculture ministry estimated that growers spend up to US$1.00 to produce one kg of tobacco.
Munthali was quoted as saying that the TCC was considering introducing a quota system to regulate tobacco production and address the quality issues that had depressed prices and increased rejection rates this season. Enditem
