Bulgarian Farmers Flex Muscles in Subsidies Dispute

Farmers from around Bulgaria were today due to stage a nation-wide protest in which more than 3,000 pieces of farming machinery were to be driven to cross-border checkpoints and main thoroughfares, according to a Novinite story. The organizers were quoted as telling Darik radio that they would not block roads and borders during the first day of their protest, but threatened to do so if their demands were not fulfilled. They said they were prepared to paralyze Sofia on December 1. It wasn't clear whether tobacco growers would take part in the protest, but they form one of the three groups - the other two being grain producers and animal farmers - that receive state subsidies; the overall, 2012-budget level of which is in dispute.
