Irene Cost NC 150 Million Pounds of Flue-Cured Source from: Tobacco Reporter 11/24/2011 Hurricane Irene is estimated to have reduced flue-cured production in North Carolina by 150 million pounds, according to a report in the latest issue of the Tobacco Farmer Newsletter, edited by Chris Bickers and quoting Sandy Stewart, an NC Extension tobacco specialist.
The most recent estimate by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), conducted on October 1, put the NC production volume at 285.6 million pounds.
NASS estimates that Virginia produced about 46.8 million pounds, South Carolina about 23.2 million pounds and Georgia about 27.0 million pounds.
Florida, which isn't included in the NASS survey, is thought to have produced about 2.3 million pounds. Enditem
